26. Frederick DYER

Frederick DYER was one of 14 children. He served in the navy but jumped ship and joined the army. He changed his name to Russell and joined the Royal Artillery. He was awarded the Oakleaves and mentioned in dispatches when one day, when he refused to leave his post when all else had fled. He lived at the following addresses 1. 1917 46 Clevedon Street, London 2. George Street 3. Elizabeth Mews, Hampstead 4. 14 Kings Road, Camden Town 5. 116 Abbots Road, Burnt Oak 6. 34 Ashley Drive, Borehamwood 7. Thameswold Avenue, Borehamwood

Frederick was one of 14 children. The family came from Chalk Farm/Camden Town. He ended up in Borehamwood. Haulage Contractor.

Fred was a Buffalo (Mason)

Fred enlisted into the Guards at 15 years. He was a large lad and got away with being underage. However, he found the Guards too hard, and absconded. He changed his name to Russell & got into the Royal Artillary serving in the trenches in France and also Gibralter. He was awarded the Oakleaves & mentioned in despatches, when on one particular day, he refused to leave his post when all else had fled. He might have been awarded the V.C. but for the fact he swore at an Officer.

Due to the noise of the guns, Fred was rendered partially deaf.

Notes for ALICE WHITE:
Although Rene has a short copy of Alice's birth certificate, The General Register Office could find no birth certificate for her!!!

She worked for the B.B.C., Hunters Horn, Barnet General & Edgware General at various times.

Alice was the youngest daughter, she was 12 days old at the time of the 1891 census. The family birth certificate shows her as being born in 1896? The first Alice may have died as an infant.

She had a total of 9 children, 2 died as infants.
