2 CONT In his own words, Ron was brought up in a Victorian family, although hewas born in the "Roari
2 CONC ng Twenties".
2 CONT He was an only child, Bessie would have loved more children, but Erniewas extremely thrifty
2 CONC . That was that Being an only child and ratheralone, Ron was a bookworm, devouring anything h
2 CONC e could get hold of. Hereall enjoyed "Dickens". The summer before the war began, Ron enjoye
2 CONC d hisfirst holiday abroad without his  parents. With a friend, he wentclimbing in thenBernes
2 CONC e Oberland, Switzerland, followed by a week inOstend. He returned to the U.K. and completed h
2 CONC is BricklayerApprenticeship.
2 CONT If not for the war, Ron would have been called up for National Service inJuly, 1940, anyway
2 CONC , for two years conscription training. When war brokeout, major construction companies organi
2 CONC sed a recruitment drive, forvolunteers in the industry, to join the Roy a l Engineers, mainl
2 CONC y tobuild airfields in France, to provide facilites to launch an offensiveattack on the Germa
2 CONC ns. Ron decided  that being a volunteer and gettingR.E. Corps pay, rather than waiting unti
2 CONC l he was called up and going tothe Front Line, was a better option.
2 CONT He was sworn in at Deansbrook Territorial Drill Hall in January, 1940,joining No. 683 Company
2 CONC ,
2 CONT He rapidly gained promotion through the ranks to Officer, enjoying theresponsibility & positi
2 CONC on, revelling  in Army life.
2 CONT February, 1940 - Ron reported to the R.E. Depot @ Chatham, for basictraining in 683 Company
2 CONC , along with 349 other men. Eight weeks later, theCompany was rushed off to Margate, to defen
2 CONC d &
2 CONT patrol the beaches there, as an invasion by the Germans was anticipated ,but never actually h
2 CONC appened.
2 CONT Soon after Easter, 1940, the Company took a troop train to Glasgow, wereput in a boat and wer
2 CONC e off to Norway, as the Germans had attacked thereand aid was needed. First Line troops coul
2 CONC d not be spared, so R.E.Companies were sent. Many perished, but Norway fell, before Ron & The
2 CONC Company arrived. They turned  around & docked at Gourock, Scotland,marched down to Greenock a
2 CONC nd occupied an old whiskey distillery  there,whilst the War Office thought they had been los
2 CONC t in Norway. It took 6weeks, due to the confusion, for new orders to arrive.
2 CONT Ron's Company was split in two, his half went to the Shetland Islandsfirst then met up with t
2 CONC he others on the Orkney Islands, once theirduties there were complete.
2 CONT Following his exceptional abilities on all the courses he went on, Ronwas promoted to Full Co
2 CONC rporal, then  later, Lance Seargent. During aperiod of leave in 1941,he met Irene Dyer, follo
2 CONC wing an exchange ofcorrespondance that occurred by chance. His next Stationing was as BartonS
2 CONC tacey, in Hampshire, as an Instructor, a Drill Seargeant.
2 CONT In 1942, he was  sent on an Officer Selection Course, accepted forOfficer training , posted f
2 CONC irst to Caterham, then in November, 1942, toBarmouth, North Wales, for three months
2 CONC .                 Ron & Irene gotmarried by Special Licence in January, 1943, whilst he was o
2 CONC n leave. Ronunfortunatlely caught Malaria, whilst out in Burma.
2 CONT On his return to the U.K., had to spend some time in Shenley Hospital,Tropical Diseases secti
2 CONC on.
2 CONT In 1943, Ron was stationed in South Africa for 6 months. Then spent 1943& 1944 in Burmah. Com
2 CONC misioned February, 1943, into the Royal SussexRegiment and posted to the  3rd. Battalion at W
2 CONC est Hartlepool.
2 CONT Three months there and then off to the Young Soldiers Battalion of theRoyal Sussex at Caterha
2 CONC m.
2 CONT Three weeks later he was posted to the West Africa Frontier Force and wasto join the Nigeri
2 CONC a Regiment serving in Sierra Leone. After a long waitfor transport he arrived in Freetown  th
2 CONC en up to Nigeria, Kano &Sockatoo. For a few months he had a great time of leisure, then off t
2 CONC oIndia to join Wingate's Chindits, up in the Central Provinces nearJansi.Ron moved across t
2 CONC o Assam and then six months in Burma. WingatesChindits, was a newspaper name given  to a Comp
2 CONC any formed by GeneralCharles Orde-Wingate, long range penetration groups or Chindits, afterth
2 CONC e mythical Burmese lion that guarded every Burmese temple. Ron saw morethan his share of acti
2 CONC on. Following a bad case of Malaria and then YellowJaundice, he returned to the U.K.
2 CONT He was demobbed in June, 1946 and returned to his civilian occupation ofBricklayer. Ron & Ren
2 CONC e moved to Borehamwood in 1951. He was a bricklayerwith the John Laing
2 CONT Construction Company, in the early days and went on to have a 50 yearhistory with them. He jo
2 CONC ined the group in June 1934 as an apprenticebricklayer.  In 1967 Ron joined Laings Allocatio
2 CONC n Department where he wasresponsible for non-mechanical plant. He was senior clerical office
2 CONC r whenhe retired. He became involved  with The Elstree & Borehamwood MentallyHandicapped Soci
2 CONC ety. He organised 3 Charity Walks from Southend toBorehamwood, in the early 1970's, which att
2 CONC racted thousands ofparticipants. Much of his hard work changed the fortunes of the Societyan
2 CONC d many mentally hadicapped children had their lives improved. Threetimes a year he went t
2 CONC o a chalet in Clacton, owed by Mencap, to decorateand maintain it.
2 CONT His hobbies included film making, building doll's  houses and voluntarywork. Much of the volu
2 CONC ntary work was at Luton & Dunstable Hospital.

2 CONC an home, he was greatly influenced by his mother,whom he lost in his tenth year. He gave hims
2 CONC elf to Christ under theministry of the Rev. John Boulter in his thirteenth year. In 1879 he w
2 CONC asaccepted as a Candidate for the Ministry. After a year on the List ofReserve, he was traine
2 CONC d at Didsbury and Handsworth Colleges, and in 1884was appointed to Nottingham (Wesley). God h
2 CONC ad richly endowed him withgifts which he diligently cultivated and used in manifold fold serv
2 CONC icefor Christ and His Church. He had a strong physique and a powerful voice.his unfailing cou
2 CONC rtesy and manliness, and his sympathy with the sufferingpoor, endeared him to them as a perso
2 CONC nal friend, he took a broad outlookon men and affairs.

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: He was a generous colleague, a trusted and beloved leader, whocommunicated his ow
2 CONC n vitality to his fellow workers. He was a successfulopen-air preacher. First and last, he wa
2 CONC s an evangelist. He carefullyprepared his public utterances, and gave the best of his mind an
2 CONC d heart.Every sermon and address had its powerful pleading, and many were theseals to his min
2 CONC istry. He found his true sphere in Home Missionenterprise. His labours for fourteen years a
2 CONC t St. John's Square,Clerkenwell, seven years at East Ham and three years at the WestminsterCe
2 CONC ntral Hall, can never be forgotten. his passion for his Master, hislove for the people, his p
2 CONC ulpit ability, and his gifts of administrationfound full opportunity for expression.
2 CONT He achieved equal success in his later work as District Missionary andChairman of the East An
2 CONC glia District. He had deep sympathy with ruralpopulations and struggling circuits and delight
2 CONC ed to visit villagecauses. He was a father to the young men of his District, and to all abrot
2 CONC her trusted and beloved. Outside our own communion, Anglicans andFree Churchmen alike sough
2 CONC t his aid, and to all he was the popularNonconformist Bishop of East Anglia."

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: He was the second President of the National BrotherhoodFederation in 1908. His sec
2 CONC retarial gifts were fully recognised by hisown Church. He was elected to the Legal Hundred i

2 CONC ary,and in 1922 was made President. His Presidential year was one of greatdistinction, marke
2 CONC d by widespread evangelistic revival. He was enteringwith equal energy upon an equally crowde
2 CONC d programme as Ex-President, whenGod called him to higher service. He died suddenly at Castle

2 CONT BIOGRAPHY: Born in Melton Mowbray in May of 1862, Councillor ArthurWakerley was articled to t
2 CONC he Leicester architect James Bird. As anarchitect he was responsible for many buildings whic
2 CONC h can still be seen,such as the Turkey Café on Gramby Street; the Singer Building in the High
2 CONC Street; The Public Halls in Belgrave, Evington and Knighton; and for mostof the development o
2 CONC f the North Evington District. He also designedLeicester's first council houses, built just a
2 CONC fter World War I. In 1886he was elected to the Town Council and in 1897 served as Mayor, they
2 CONC oungest to do so since 1835. His year of office was marked by theWhitwick Colliery disaster
2 CONC , which claimed 35 lives. Outside politics,Wakerley was an enthusiastic Wesleyan preacher an
2 CONC d ardent temperanceworker. His other interests included poetry and archaeology. He neverreall
2 CONC y recovered from the loss of his only son, Arthur, who was killed inaction near Lens, in Jun
2 CONC e 1917. Arthur Wakerley died in April of 1931.

2 CONC s at thecorner of Severn Street built in the 1960s to fill a space left by a bombin the Secon
2 CONC d World War). The following year, on 15 July 1887, Gwendolen,the first of their six children
2 CONC , was born. After four years in HighfieldStreet, Councilor and Mrs Wakerley moved to 46 Londo
2 CONC n Road, previouslyowned by a surgeon, Charles Pearce - a middle-class area where oneneighbou
2 CONC r was a dentist and the other a doctor.

2 CONC ry, with plaster carving and other decoration.Wakerley altered the entrance by adding to th
2 CONC e frontage a porch extendingl7ft 6in towards the pavement and 9ft 6in wide. This porch ha
2 CONC d a facadelike the gateway of a miniature castle or manor house, with columns oneach side sur
2 CONC mounted by pinnacles (now removed). At the rear overlookingthe garden, he added a four-arche
2 CONC d italianate facade, with columns andpinnacles, echoing those on the new front. The entranc

2 CONC e Wakerleys lived in this house for over twenty years. In 1902 itsnumber was again changed t

2 CONC ghimself as 'architect's manager', which he celebrated by moving house to79 Evington Road. O
2 CONC n 3 December 1904, the two men entered intopartnership, and the firm of Wakerley and Wells wa
2 CONC s established. TheArticles of Partnership provided that Wakerley would obtain thecommission
2 CONC s and Wells would manage the office, although Wakerley alsotrained Wells in the art of archit
2 CONC ectural drawing. The Articles alsoprovided that both should share equally the profits and an

2 CONC f Gedding (pronouncedlocally as 'Gidding'), and patron of the advowsons of both Gedding andBr

2 CONC her was surely something of an anomaly. TheHall was built in 1273 and re-built in the fifteen
2 CONC th century. Theoriginal owners were the Geddyng family who lived there until 1357, whenthey w
2 CONC ere followed by the Chamberlains, who remained in residence until1582. Various owners then oc
2 CONC cupied the house until, in 1896, in adesolate state, it passed into the hands of Arthur Waker
2 CONC ley. Formerly aquadrilateral building, only a portion of the front remained. A moatsurrounde
2 CONC d the Hall and it was necessary to cross it "... by a somewhatfearsome plank bridge to get t
2 CONC o the front door". Within only a year,Wakerley had restored the remaining part of the old hou
